Bioremediation Technology
  • Bioremediation is the use of microbes to break down biologically petroleum-based (hydrocarbons) contaminants.
  • The surface area of the contaminant is increased, breaking it down from macro-sized to micro-sized molecules.
  • The microbes produce extra-cellular enzymes which transform the micro-sized contaminants into a food source for the microbes.
  • The microbes readily digest the food source producing carbon dioxide and water as non-toxic by-products. The enzymes initiate the metabolic process by acting as "knives and forks" by reducing the contaminant to a more manageable size.
  • The microbes identify the origination of the food source and alter the enzyme production to attack the identified source.
